Urgent Call for E-bike Battery Safety Regulations as Fires and Fatalities Soar


An alarming surge in fires and fatalities caused by lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes has raised urgent concerns over the safety of these popular motorized bicycles. Recent incidents, particularly in New York City, have prompted consumer advocates, fire departments, and legislators to rally for strict regulations governing the manufacturing, sale, reconditioning, charging, and storage of e-bike batteries. As the number of these micromobility devices continues to grow, so does the risk to public safety. In response, city officials and federal authorities are pushing for mandatory safety standards and increased scrutiny of noncompliant imports.

The tragedy struck early one June morning when a New York City shop, filled with motorized bicycles and their volatile lithium-ion batteries, caught fire, quickly engulfing apartments above the store. Four innocent lives were lost, highlighting the urgency of addressing the rising number of e-bike battery-related incidents. Unlike conventional fires, the batteries powering e-bikes have the potential to explode rather than smolder, leading to devastating consequences.

With New York City hosting over 65,000 e-bikes - more than any other U.S. location - the city has become the epicenter of battery-related fires. In the current year alone, there have been 100 such blazes, resulting in 13 fatalities, surpassing last year's total by more than double. Nationally, there have been over 200 reported battery-related fires from 39 states in the past two years, including 19 deaths associated with battery-powered scooters, bicycles, and hoverboards.

Legislative Action and Challenges: 

Recognizing the pressing need for safety standards, New York's Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, introduced legislation to mandate safety standards for e-bikes and their batteries. The lack of mandatory standards has allowed poorly made batteries to flood the U.S., significantly increasing the risk of fires. However, the source of these batteries, especially those from overseas, has proven challenging for authorities to track, making regulation and enforcement even more complex.

New York City has taken proactive steps to combat the fire hazard by enacting laws to crack down on defective batteries, including banning the sale or rental of e-bikes and batteries that lack independent product testing lab certifications. Moreover, a recent $25 million federal grant has been allocated to install e-bike charging stations across the city to reduce the risk of fires.

Safety Compliance and the Path Forward: 

Experts assert that e-bike batteries can be made safer through adherence to established safety standards and compliance testing. One critical missing feature in many batteries is an automatic shut-off mechanism to prevent overheating and the resulting explosions and fires. Industry stakeholders are calling for greater scrutiny of e-bike imports and advocating for closing off the borders to unsafe lithium-ion batteries.

As the use of e-bikes continues to rise, ensuring the safety of their batteries is of paramount importance. The growing number of battery-related fires and fatalities demands swift action from regulators, industry leaders, and consumers alike.
